    Sydney

Arriving by cruise ship in Sydney allows you to explore one of Australia’s most iconic destinations. The Sydney Opera House, located right in the heart of the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and renowned worldwide for its extraordinary architecture with its distinctive shell-shaped roofs. The Harbour Bridge connects the northern shore with Sydney’s city centre and can be crossed on foot, offering unique views of Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and the city’s impressive skyline. An important part of Sydney’s history, the bridge is affectionately known by locals as the “Old Coat Hanger.” It is also famous as the backdrop for the spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks, watched live by millions of people around the world.

Bondi Beach is not only one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches but also a popular surfing spot attracting visitors from all over the world. Those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Bondi Beach promenade, where numerous cafés and restaurants invite you to stop and unwind.

    Bay of Islands

Maori culture is the indigenous culture of New Zealand and is shaped by a deep connection to nature, spirituality and a strong sense of community. Key elements of Maori culture also include rich traditions of art, craftsmanship, music and dance. One of its most important values is the warm hospitality of the local people.

The subtropical island region is known for its mild climate and consists of 144 islands waiting to be explored. The Bay of Islands is a true paradise for sailors, kayakers, divers and anglers alike. It is also home to important historical sites such as the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. This treaty represents New Zealand’s founding document and its oldest constitutional agreement.

    Airlie Beach

The coastal town of Airlie Beach, located in the heart of the Whitsundays region, is a popular holiday destination. From here, you have direct access to explore the marine park off the coast and nearby Whitsunday Island. With its year-round tropical climate, beautiful beaches, waterfront parklands, a variety of restaurants and lively markets, Airlie Beach invites visitors to enjoy its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The Great Barrier Reef, stretching over more than 2,300 kilometres along Australia’s east coast, offers an extraordinary range of coastal experiences found in very few places worldwide. Swim among stunning coral formations and encounter rare whale species in this unique natural wonder.

    Milford Sound

Milford Sound is located in a remote part of New Zealand’s South Island, in the heart of Fiordland National Park. The term “sound” is used because a sound is formed when a river valley is flooded by the sea, whereas fjords are shaped by glacial erosion. Milford Sound takes its name from Milford Haven on the Welsh coast. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its dramatic scenery, featuring waterfalls that plunge hundreds of metres down steep cliffs, as well as for the presence of penguin colonies that can often be observed in the area.

    Auckland

In Auckland, two worlds come together. Lush rainforests, parks and beaches are all located close to the city centre, offering wonderful opportunities to hike through rainforest landscapes, past scenic waterfalls and along the coastline. In contrast, the modern metropolis impresses with a variety of urban attractions. Auckland’s most famous landmark is the Sky Tower, which rises 328 metres above the city.

In addition, visitors will find excellent shopping opportunities along Queen Street, which stretches from Karangahape Road all the way to the cruise terminal.

    Melbourne

Australia’s cultural capital is a vibrant hub for art, culture and events. A visit to the Ian Potter Centre, a gallery dedicated to Australian art, is highly recommended. A stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens, surrounded by native ferns and palm trees, offers a welcome escape from the bustle of the city. During a cruise to Melbourne, a day trip to the Yarra Valley is well worth it, where you can enjoy sweeping views of extensive vineyards and sample excellent Chardonnay wines.

Melbourne’s multicultural character is also reflected in its outstanding culinary scene. At the Queen Victoria Market, you can savour Turkish börek, a savoury pastry filled with minced meat and sheep’s cheese. A visit to Chinatown offers the chance to try delicious Chinese dumplings. Along the southern and northern banks of the Yarra River, you will find fine-dining restaurants serving fish and seafood specialities such as king prawns with tortellini, as well as classic Australian dishes.

    Brisbane

One of the most famous highlights of a cruise stop in Brisbane and the Gold Coast is Fraser Island. The island can be reached from the mainland by ferry and is almost entirely made of sand. It offers a wide range of experiences, from swimming in crystal-clear waters to observing the diverse marine life.

The K’gari Great Walk on the world’s largest sand island leads through impressive sand dunes and past stunning blue lakes. Along the way, you can also encounter Australia’s unique wildlife, making this destination a true nature experience.

What can I expect on a cruise through Australia?

A cruise through Australia is a journey of contrasts. You will explore stunning coastlines, lush rainforests and the vast Australian Outback. These three very different landscapes, experienced during a Cunard cruise around Australia, are diverse yet equally captivating. Highlights of an Australian cruise include the Great Barrier Reef and Milford Sound. As the largest coral reef system in the world, the Great Barrier Reef is home to countless marine species, while Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park is a natural spectacle that is truly unique in its form.

During shore excursions in Down Under, you can choose between relaxation and active outdoor adventures. Enjoy unforgettable diving experiences, guided kayaking tours or hikes in the mountains. Discover Australia’s culinary specialties such as barbecues, freshly caught seafood and excellent Australian wines. Culture enthusiasts will also be delighted, as cities like Melbourne and Sydney offer vibrant urban art scenes and many fascinating corners waiting to be explored.

When is the best time to go on an Australian cruise?

Australia is a fascinating cruise destination: diverse, sun-drenched and attractive to travellers all year round.

    image

    Eastcoast (Sydney, Brisbane)

From November to March, Australia’s east coast is in peak cruise season. During the warm, dry summer months, beaches, cities and natural landscapes can be explored and enjoyed at a relaxed pace.

    image

    Southeast (Melbourne)

For cruises to the region around Melbourne, the period from October to April is recommended. The temperate climate offers mild summers and pleasant autumn days, making it ideal for shore excursions and city sightseeing.

    image

    New Zealand & Milford Sound

Many Australia cruises also include New Zealand. The best time to visit is from December to February, when the fjords, nature and landscapes are especially green, clear and perfect for photography.

    image

Great Barrier Reef & Airlie Beach

Anyone wishing to explore the famous reef while snorkelling or diving should travel between May and October. During this dry season, underwater visibility is at its best – a dream for all ocean lovers.

How can I best prepare for an Australia cruise?

A cruise around Australia (and often New Zealand as well) is an unforgettable experience – but good preparation is essential. Here is an overview of the most important points:

    1. Travel documents – what you need on board

    Passport:
Essential. Your passport must be valid for at least six months upon entry. A national ID card is not sufficient.

    Visa for Australia:
Most European cruise guests require a free eVisitor visa.
Apply online via the Australian immigration authority’s website, ideally at least two to three weeks before departure.

    Entry authorisation for New Zealand:
Many Australia cruises also call at New Zealand ports. For this, an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) is required.

Additional tips for preparing for your cruise:

    Vaccinations & health:
No specific vaccinations are required for Australia, but standard vaccinations (e.g. tetanus, hepatitis A) should be up to date.
Our recommendation: Don’t forget sun protection and insect repellent.

    Clothing & climate:
Australia has many climate zones – from tropical (Great Barrier Reef) to temperate (Melbourne).
Our recommendation: Light summer clothing, sun protection and swimwear.

    Time difference & jet lag:
Depending on the region, Australia is 8–10 hours ahead of Europe.
Our recommendation: Arriving early or spending a night in a hotel before the cruise can help.

Recommended contents of a travel medical kit for an Australia cruise:

    1. For general travel ailments:

    • Medication for motion sickness

    • Painkillers and fever reducers (e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen)

    • Remedies for stomach and digestive issues (e.g. diarrhoea, constipation, nausea)

    • Electrolytes for rehydration in heat or in case of stomach problems

    • Plasters, blister plasters and disinfectant

    • Scissors, tweezers, digital thermometer

    1. For tropical and sunny climates:

    • High-SPF sunscreen (at least SPF 30, preferably SPF 50)

    • After-sun lotion or aloe vera gel

    • Insect repellent (e.g. containing DEET), especially in tropical regions and during shore excursions

    • Treatments for insect bites or allergic reactions (e.g. antihistamine gel or tablets)

    1. Personal medication:

    • Sufficient supply of regular medication (preferably in hand luggage)

    • Copies of prescriptions in English, if required

    • Doctor’s certificate for syringes, insulin, etc., if applicable

    1. Useful extras depending on the itinerary:

    • Nasal spray (for dry cabin air or air conditioning)

    • Earplugs or sleep mask for light sleepers

    • Travel diary or health app for symptom tracking, if needed

    Cunard tip:
There is usually a well-stocked ship’s pharmacy on board, but prices may be higher and not all items are available without a prescription. It’s best to arrive well prepared.

    2. Cultural tips for visitors to Australia

To ensure a smooth start to your Australia cruise, here are two important tips for shore excursions:

    Left-hand traffic:
Australia drives on the left. This applies to taxis, shuttle buses and rental cars.
Take special care when crossing the road, especially watching traffic coming from the right.

    Tipping is not mandatory:
Tipping is not expected in Australia, whether in restaurants or taxis.
However, for exceptional service, a small gratuity of around 5–10% is appreciated.

Packing list for your Australia adventure

Well prepared for your journey – these items should not be missing on your Australia cruise:

    • Swimwear – for beautiful beaches, pools and the Great Barrier Reef

    • Hiking shoes – ideal for active shore excursions and nature walks

    • Sun hat – essential protection from the strong Australian sun

    • International power adapter – Australia uses different plug types (Type I)

Are there family-friendly cruises to Australia?

Yes, families will find suitable accommodation on board. Many suites and cabins offer ample space for up to four guests, thanks to flexible sleeping arrangements such as a king-size bed (or two single beds), a double sofa bed, a single sofa bed and/or bunk beds. The sofa beds are set up and folded away daily by the cabin steward, ensuring sufficient space during the day.

Travelling with a baby (from 12 months, in exceptional cases from 6 months)?
A baby cot can be provided on request. Due to limited availability, early reservation is recommended.

More space for families – adjoining cabins available
For larger families or added comfort, two cabins can also be booked. On request, we will try to allocate them next to each other. Children up to the age of 12 must always share a cabin with an adult. Teenagers aged 13 and over may share a cabin with older siblings (from 16 years), which is ideal for those who would like a little more privacy.

Family cruises – entertainment at sea and ashore
Families can look forward to a wide range of leisure activities on board, including children’s pools, family-friendly shows, creative workshops and numerous activities for guests of all ages.

There is also plenty to discover ashore: visits to wildlife parks, relaxing beach days or exciting snorkelling adventures make every cruise an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
